Women's Primary Care Q & A
What is Women's Primary Care?
Women's primary care begins during adolescence. When a girl, either preteen or teenager, has her first menstrual period, her body begins to take on the characteristics of a woman. These new changes are best evaluated by a doctor who has experience in gynecological medicine. Physician assistant Melissa Ranallo is specifically trained to handle all types of women's health problems. Whether the patient is a teenager or in her later years, she can provide the care needed to maintain good health as well as restore health once a potential problem has been diagnosed. Our doctors and PA work hand-in-hand to provide patients with the information they need to create positive lifestyle habits.
What Health Conditions are Primary Concerns for Women?
While heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes are common health concerns for both men and women, there are many conditions that only affect females. Polycystic ovarian syndrome, ovarian cysts, menopause, premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy, endometriosis, incontinence, and cancers of the uterus, ovaries, and cervix are problems only women will face. Gynecologists and obstetricians understand how the female body works and are better able to offer sound medical advice when it comes to certain health conditions. Women who visit an OB-GYN are offered personalized service that addresses needs that only pertain to them. Individualized treatment plans are offered to help them maintain good health in all areas.
Do Women Have Special Health Care Needs?
In certain aspects, women do have special needs that are different from men. While a man’s reproductive system consists of relatively few parts, a woman's reproductive system consists of several and is quite complex. A woman’s reproductive system includes the breasts, ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix and vagina. Maintaining a healthy reproductive system involves understanding how each component works, as well as what health problems can affect each part. In addition to the woman's needs, the doctor must also understand how to treat and care for growing fetuses. Doctors and PAs providing women’s primary care are also able to support the psychological aspect of what pregnancy and childbirth can do to a woman's body and mental health.
