What Types of Birth Control are Available?

Nexplanon® is an implantable contraceptive that is implanted just below the skin in the upper arm and offers sustained release hormones. This type of implant can last up to three years. Nuvaring is a flexible ring that the woman herself place in the vagina. It secretes hormones, effectively preventing pregnancy. Depo-Provera is an injection that is given every three months. The only non-daily, non-invasive contraceptive on the market is the Xulane® Patch. In addition to these types of birth control methods, oral contraceptives are also available and extremely popular. Who is a Good Candidate for Birth Control Implants?

Birth control implants are ideal for women who require a sustained release contraceptive. Active women who are in good health and want the convenience of not having to take a pill every morning make ideal candidates for this type of contraceptive. The implants are placed in the fleshy area of the upper arm. The implant is relatively painless and produces few side effects once it is in place. Individuals who have irregular periods and intense pre-menstrual syndrome symptoms typically experience a more normal cycle using the birth control implant. What are the Side Effects of Birth Control?

Most types of birth control have side effects, but it is important to note that different types of birth control affect women differently. Many women do not experience any side effects at all. A few of the more common side effects associated with birth control are menstrual changes, headaches, mood changes, increase (or decrease) in acne and weight changes. Some side effects may appear right away, while others won’t appear for several months or even years. As a woman ages, her reaction to birth control may change.
